Anderson Silva explains UFC business practices and its only “problem” with Dana White

Anderson Silva has a unique perspective on how the UFC does business, especially now that he’s out looking inside.

It’s been nearly two years since “The Spider” split from the promotion he called home from 2006 to 2020 and, at the moment, he’s looking forward to a much-discussed boxing match against YouTube star Jake Paul to take place. on October 18. 29 in Glendale, Arizona.

During an appearance on MMA time On Wednesday, Silva spoke about Paul’s highly publicized feud with UFC president Dana White over the fighters’ pay before offering his thoughts on the complicated relationship between the promotion and his fighters.

“Those are two things,” said Silva. “Jake and his brother [Logan] he tried to draw attention to something very important. On the other hand, when you come to the UFC, you have your manager, you have your team and you have to take care of your business, right? What happens when people go to the UFC and start talking about “I don’t make money” and this and that: you have the choice of whether or not to sign the contract. Your manager, your attorney and your team have to take care of this part of the business, because you don’t have time to focus on that. You have to take care of why you represent your company. You have a contract to do a job in the UFC. It is your company because you put crazy things in your body. In UFC, you go into business and put everything in your name, to make the big show.

“In this case, I don’t think the UFC is wrong or Dana is wrong. Dana tried to do your job and the UFC [gives you] a job. The problem is the fighters, when they come in and sign the contract. You have already signed the contract, you have no possibility of changing unless the contract is concluded.

“My personal opinion, obviously the UFC can pay fighters better. Especially a couple of fighters who do something very, very amazing within the UFC and make the UFC name strong and powerful. do more [respect] for the brand. But it’s all about, talk to your manager, having a good thing behind you to protect yourself, so don’t sign something you don’t like in the future. Many very talented fighters sign something very crazy because the manager doesn’t care about the fighters. It’s all about numbers and money, and that’s the problem. “

Silva, 47, has repeatedly stressed the importance of fighters building a following using the platform offered to them by the UFC, pointing to the Paul brothers as examples of how their worth can be increased. Both Jake and Logan Paul have leveraged their massive social media success in careers in combat sports, with Jake owning wins over former MMA champions Tyron Woodley and Ben Askren, and Logan playing eight rounds with Floyd Mayweather and also having signed with WWE to become its biggest attractions.

During his 14 years of running in the UFC, Silva has become one of the promotion’s most dominant champions, a fan-favorite fighter and a consistent pay-per-view draw. He gets mad at fighters complaining publicly about their contracts, even though he acknowledged that there is one aspect of White’s approach to business that he never liked.

“It’s weird to me, because everyone signs up and when inside they start talking, ‘Guys you don’t pay me properly’, and this and that,” said Silva. “I’ve never, in my life, talked about how much the UFC paid me because I fight a lot and that’s my problem with Dana – it’s not a problem, it’s a business, Anderson Silva is a company that enters the UFC and sign the contract They are two companies doing business together.

“My problem with Dana is [when he] talks about fighting because Dana has never fought MMA in her life. This is my problem, when she talks about “You can’t do it, you can’t do it, you don’t fight properly”. No, no, no, this is my only problem with Dana. I think Dana is a good person. Everyone talks about Dana, ‘He’s not good, blah blah blah.’ He is a good person, but he is a businessman. The UFC doesn’t come to this point as a big, big company in the world if people think, “I did something, sorry fighters, I did something wrong.” No, the company grew thanks to cheaters doing something and that’s the game. Are you in or not. You can sign or not sign, you can go anywhere, but when you sign, you make the deal with my company. Can’t you say anything why did you sign? you signed. You have a contract. “Oh no, let me terminate the contract.” You signed the contract, you saw the rules of the contract, why are you talking about it now? And I’m so lucky because I’m no longer in the UFC and have my journey right now. I don’t need to say “Can I do this?” I don’t need to ask permission from the UFC or Dana for anything anymore. “

Silva has already competed in boxing twice since his last UFC bout, defeating former WBC champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in June 2021 and then knocking out UFC legend Tito Ortiz within a round three months later.

If other fighters want to have the same opportunities, advise them to have the right team to help them understand the business better. Because change is unlikely to come from the UFC side.

“Dana is Dana,” said Silva. “She represents the UFC, she represents the UFC brand. It’s not the fighters who represent the brand, Dana represents the brand and people need to understand that. I don’t speak ill of Dana, that’s the truth. Who represents the brand? They’re not fighters, it’s Dana White. It’s amazing because when you see the media and everyone is waiting for Dana to start. How come? Because that’s the UFC brand, Dana White. [He does] a good job. Many people speak badly, many people talk a lot about Dana, but in my opinion Dana does the best job of her, continuing to be successful in sports.

“I feel sad because obviously the UFC can pay fighters more, especially heavyweights and a couple of fighters,” Silva added later. “I think the UFC needs to understand this better because the world has changed and the new generation is starting to think about it. Why go to fight in the UFC? I go there to become famous and the guys don’t pay me well for putting my life in danger. I lost a fight or two because I’m human, the boy will kick me out and I lost everything. ‘ And the new generation began to think about it. People need to understand that this is the game, it’s about numbers. It doesn’t matter if he’s in the UFC, or in boxing, in a regular job, he’s a number. Get results, you will be successful. You don’t get good results, you’re out. “
