Both cards are very similar. They include the following benefits and advantages:

Additionally, the Marriott Bonvoy Bevy Card and the Marriott Bonvoy Bontiful Card both have the same earning structure, earning points at the following rates:

Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card Changes

Earlier this year, we covered changing up to $ 300 of annual credits available on this card. Starting today (September 22, 2022), Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant cardholders no longer receive up to $ 300 in Marriott hotel spending credits. Instead, this credit is now available as a credit of up to $ 25 per month for restaurant purchases.

However, today we learned of a number of other changes to the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant. You can read all the details in this article, but here’s an overview:

  • Automatic Platinum status (formerly Gold).
  • 25 elite night credits each year (previously 15).
  • A choice benefit for spending $ 60,000 on the card in a calendar year (starting 2023).
  • An increased annual fee of $ 650 (see fees and commissions).

Thankfully, the new annual fee won’t go into effect for existing cardholders until the date of the first renewal (or after) January 2. 1, 2023. And many existing Bonvoy Brilliant cardholders are already seeing 10 extra Elite Night Credits in their accounts.

New cardholders can also earn 150,000 bonus points after spending $ 5,000 on qualifying purchases within the first three months of signing up for the card. This welcome offer ends Jan. 11, 2023. TPG values Marriott Bonvoy points at 0.84 cents each, which means this bonus is worth $ 1,260.

Improved Free Night Award on the Ritz-Carlton card

It’s more positive news for those who still hold the Ritz-Carlton card (no longer available to new applicants), as they too will see a more valuable free night award in the future. Currently, cardholders receive a free annual award night worth up to 50,000 points. On the next anniversary of your account, you will receive a free reward night worth up to 85,000 points.

However, the $ 450 annual fee on the card remains in effect, so this is a totally positive upgrade for the card.

New applicants can receive 100,000 bonus points after spending $ 4,000 on qualifying purchases within the first three months of card enrollment. TPG values Marriott Bonvoy points at 0.84 cents each, which means this bonus is worth $ 840.

Quick reflections on the changes

The benefits and perks of the new Amex Marriott Bonvoy Bevy card and Marriott Bonvoy Bontiful card take on some of what the Bonvoy Brilliant card previously offered, such as 15 Elite Night Credits and free Gold status. These benefits are now available at a lower rate ($ 200 less than previously paid in annual fees).

However, the cards don’t automatically offer an annual free night; you have to spend $ 15,000 a year to earn this free night award. This is in stark contrast to the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless card, which automatically offers a 35,000-point certificate upon renewal.

It is also worth comparing it with matching cards from other chains. As an example, the Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card awards a free weekend night after spending $ 15,000 in a calendar year, but it’s virtually valid whatever participating ownership. The card also has a lower annual fee ($ 95, see Rates and Fees), and the automatic Hilton Gold status on the Surpass card is considerably more valuable than the Marriott Gold status offered on these two new products.

Meanwhile, the World of Hyatt credit cardwhich also has an annual fee of $ 95, automatically offers a Category 1-4 Award Night on the anniversary of the account, and has the ability to earn a second free night award by spending $ 15,000 on the card each year.

On the other hand, the transition to the Ritz-Carlton card was entirely positive. Without increasing your annual fee, one of the card’s main benefits is improvement. While the product is not open to new applicants, it is available to those who switch from another Marriott cobranded credit card to this card.

The trickiest part of this news is the myriad of changes to the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card. The new benefits might be great for some travelers, but others may be turned off by the higher annual rate and monthly meal credits, which require more energy to maximize than the old $ 300 Marriott credit. Thankfully, the Existing cardholders have time to consider whether the higher annual fee is worth paying.

Bottom line

Marriott is out with some huge changes to its co-branded credit card range today – and it’s a lot to digest.

The key points are the launch of two new Marriott mid-tier credit cards and the benefits of Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Amex are improving, but the latter equates to a $ 200 increase in the annual card fee. Additionally, Ritz-Carlton cardholders will receive a more valuable annual free night in the future, while the other three Marriott credit cards have launched elevated welcome offers.

You can count on TPG to keep you updated on these changes by providing new analyzes of these cards to see if they are worth their annual fees. We’ll also be updating our detailed reviews of each card in the coming weeks, so look for those if you’re interested in applying for one of these cards or already have one (or more) in your wallet.
