World Cup highlights: Saudi Arabia stuns Argentina, Messi in historic upset

The FIFA World Cup 2022 continued Tuesday with Argentina be stunned by Saudi Arabia, 2-1, going on a 36-match unbeaten streak, the second longest in the history of international men’s football. Argentina would equal the 37 match record held by Italy with a win or a draw.

This is Argentina’s first defeat in their first World Cup match since 1990, a 1-0 defeat against Cameroon. For perspective, Argentina has appeared in every World Cup in that span. Ironically, Argentina ended up reaching the final in 1990, but lost to Germany.

Argentina, who started their opener with the third lowest odds to win the entire World Cup, now face an uphill battle to exit Group C with big matches against Mexico and Poland looming in the next days.

Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, is the first team from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) to defeat Argentina in a World Cup match. It marks Saudi Arabia’s fourth ever World Cup win, improving their all-time record to 4-11-2 (WLD).

It took Lionel Messi just over 100 total seconds of 2022 World Cup play to register his first shot on target, but a fine one-handed save from Saudi Arabia goalkeeper Muhammad Al-Owais kept the game scoreless .

10th minute: Allow him to reappear

After Argentina were awarded a penalty after video review in the 10th minute, Messi stepped up and easily scored his first goal of the 2022 World Cup.

22nd minute: Messi almost got another one!

The Argentinian star looked to have a clear escape for his second goal of the match but was ruled just offside. The sentence was confirmed by the VAR.

27th minute: another near miss

Argentina were left searching for their second goal after this score by Lautaro Martinez was also ruled offside.

35th minute: STILL offside

Argentina found the back of the net four times in the first half, but Messi’s tenth-minute penalty remained the only effective result thanks to three goals disallowed for offside.

According to OptaAnalyst, Argentina have already been caught offside seven times in this match. The last team to have more in a World Cup match was Netherlands vs. Costa Rica in 2014 with 13 offside calls.

49th minute (extra time of the first half): big defeat for the Saudis

Saudi Arabia captain Salman Al Faraj went down with an apparent injury just before half-time. With the Saudis already under pressure from Messi’s early goal, it could be a major blow to the underdogs’ chances of pulling off an upset.

48th minute (second half): Saudi Arabia draws!

Saleh Alshehri of Saudi Arabia fired a beautiful ball to level the scores at one goal apiece and suddenly Argentina were hot on their heels.

53rd minute: Saudi Arabia takes the lead!

The Saudis are suddenly knocking on the door of one of the biggest World Cup upsets EVER after a laser from Salem Aldawsari went up 2-1.

63rd minute: a huge save keeps the Saudis ahead

Another great save from Muhammad Al-Owais kept Saudi Arabia ahead as Argentina pushed for an equaliser.

83rd minute: Almost misses for Messi

Argentina were still looking to level the score and avoid a catastrophic upset, but Messi’s free kick went over the bar and his header two minutes later was saved by Al-Owais.
